Rumor: GeForce RTX 4090 with 600 watts of power consumption

Rumors have been floating around the web for a long time that Nvidia’s upcoming RTX 4000 GPUs, aka Ada Lovelace, could require significantly more performance than the current generation of graphics cards. A well-known Nvidia leaker has now confirmed that the power consumption of the top model should be 600 watts.

Shortly after the release of the first Ampere graphics card in the form of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 (to the test report), the first rumors about the next generation aka Ada Lovelace appeared. We have summarized all the rumors about the RTX 4000 in a separate article for you. That’s why it’s been “known” for a long time that the power consumption of upcoming GPUs could be very high. Now the Nvidia leaker has kopite7kimi

confirmed
that the TGP (Total Graphics Power) of the next top model – probably RTX 4090 – should be an enormous 600 watts.

RTX 4090 with a power consumption of 600 watts?

With the introduction of Ampere, Nvidia has significantly increased the power consumption compared to the previous generation Turing. While the TDP of the RTX 2080 Ti is still 260 watts, it is around 35 percent higher for the RTX 3090 (to the test report) at 350 watts. But that should not be the end of the story, as there are currently many rumors circulating about the RTX 3090 Ti announced at CES (read the article), according to which the power consumption of the new top model is said to be a whopping 450 watts. For this, Nvidia relies on the new PCIe Gen 5 standard with the so-called 12VHPWR power connector, which can transmit up to 600 watts.

As it stands, the next generation alias Ada Lovelace could top it again. While the first rumors assumed a TGP range of 450 to 500 watts for the xx90 top model, the most recent rumors speak a completely different language. In a tweet, the well-known leaker gives

kopite7kimi
states that a TGP of 600 watts for the xx90 GPU is considered safe, but at the same time says that it is too early to talk about it.

Greymon55
who has also regularly correctly predicted specifications for Nvidia GPUs in the past, even goes one step further: In addition to the 600 watts for an RTX 4090, he also mentions 450 watts for an RTX 4080 and 800 watts or more for a possible RTX 4090 Ti

Considering the fact that the new GPUs are supposed to be equipped with the 16-pin power connector, which alone can deliver 600 watts and the fact that in recent weeks many power supply manufacturers have been introducing new power supplies with 1000 watts and more including 16-pin Power plugs have presented, these rumors do not sound too improbable. However, it should not be forgotten that the development of a new graphics card and the heat sink takes a lot of time. Nvidia must provide the board partners with a value in advance of the power consumption the heat sinks of the graphics cards must be able to dissipate. It is therefore quite possible that the 600 watts only refer to the maximum cooling capacity of the heat sink and not to the actual power consumption. However, we are slowly having to come to terms with the idea that this should still be quite high.

Graphics card comparison 2022: GeForce RTX and Radeon RX GPUs in the test – with ranking

The background is probably that AMD wants to use an MCM design (multi-chip module) for the top models of the RX 7000 GPUs (read the article), which should triple the number of computing units. The RTX 4000 graphics cards, on the other hand, are said to have installed a conventional, monolithic graphics chip. For this reason, it could be difficult for Nvidia to keep up with AMD in terms of processing power without significantly increasing the power consumption.
