Workations have become an increasingly well-known term. Not at home from behind the desk, but at a different, often inspiring, location to work out the project, meet deadlines and / or come up with new ideas.
Sabrina Schipper (41) from Travel Counselors offers such arrangements. “The term workation is a combination of ‘work’ and ‘vacation’. A workation is therefore a combination of work and travel / leisure. Nowadays, work and private life are increasingly intertwined, and especially now with corona. ”
Where it used to be possible to sunny places like Spain, because of the corona restrictions, it is now mainly the Netherlands: in the autumn / winter the forests of the east of the Netherlands are more popular and in the spring / winter more people move to the water of the west of the Netherlands. she sees. “Initially my focus was abroad. A different landscape, getting to know the norms and values of other cultures and customs and customs not only makes you richer as a person, but can also provide a lot of inspiration in the field of work and can influence your view on certain matters. But now that traveling abroad is not an option, I have started to focus more on the Netherlands, because in our country you will also find beautiful, inspiring places and there are major differences between the regions. Walking or cycling in a different environment or finding the peace you cannot find at home can give you a lot of new energy and contribute positively to your productivity and creativity. ”
Schipper knows exactly what to pay attention to to make the workation as successful as possible. “I first look at whether a place can compete with the home environment in terms of facilities. Think of good WiFi, telephone range, good coffee / kitchenette, good beds. Then I look for unique components: a special accommodation, an inspiring environment. That’s what makes the difference. For the Netherlands, for example, we offer choices such as water, forest and city. If traveling is allowed and possible again I want to add mountains, beach and snow. I also check whether a provider is reliable. I only work with stable parties from the travel world. ”
And yes, of course you can also book a hotel yourself to escape the home working situation. “Everyone can book something themselves. There is plenty to be found on the internet. But that is also a pitfall. Since corona there have been so many parties that offer workations. My added value is the personal service. Organizing a good workation takes quite a lot of time and the question remains whether what you have booked matches what you are looking for. I take that work off people’s hands. The entire workation is arranged from A to Z and you can continue to focus on your work. It is a total package: in addition to the workation providers, I also work with parties that offer excursions, the Dutch Railways, airlines, I can arrange private transfers and you can also call in me for help and questions on the spot. ”
What does it yield? A fresh head, she now knows. “I think people are getting a little tired of working from home. If you spend all day between the kitchen table, the kitchen and the sofa and your social life is limited, then you get into a kind of rut. Even with a busy family life, you have to continuously make choices to keep all the balls in the air. I can well imagine that people increasingly feel the need to ‘escape’ this for a few days. ”
In fact, she herself is the best example of what such a workation can do. “I have two young children who are often at home due to corona. I am constantly building my work around family life and that causes unrest and sometimes also stress. During a workation I do not have to take anyone into account, I can determine my own schedule, I meet interesting people that I would not otherwise have met, I eat what I like and I fill in the breaks and the time outside of work with things which gives me energy. And when I return home my mind is empty and I am a nicer mother and partner.
Achieved goals, a fresh head, new inspiration: that’s what it delivers. Of course it also costs something, but costs you incur for your company can in principle be deducted from the profit during the income tax return. This also applies to travel and accommodation costs for a business trip. According to the tax authorities, a workation involves mixed costs, of which only the business part is tax deductible, as long as the personal nature of the costs does not exceed 50%.
