Security updates for Chromium-based browsers – PC-WORLD

On August 16th, Google released an important security update for Chrome. In it, the Google developers have eliminated 11 vulnerabilities, including one (CVE-2022-2856) that is already being exploited in attacks. Several manufacturers of Chromium-based browsers have now followed suit and updated their web software. So far these are Brave, Microsoft (Edge) and Vivaldi. With Opera it takes longer again.

Vivaldi was the quickest to react this time and released an update to version 5.4.2753.37 on August 17th. This is already based on the somewhat newer Chromium version 104.0.5112.105. A few hours later, Brave followed suit and provided its updated version 1.42.97. Like Google Chrome, it is based on Chromium 104.0.5112.102.

Late on August 19, Microsoft released an update to version 104.0.1293.63 for Edge. It is based on Chromium 104.0.5112.102, like Chrome and Brave. With the new Edge version, Microsoft has given the edge bar more functionality. You can now access Office, Outlook, games and various tools such as a calculator. This feature enhancement will gradually be released to more users.

With Opera you take your time. The new Opera version 90.0.4480.48 from August 18 uses Chromium 104 for the first time. However, it is Chromium release 104.0.5112.81 from August 2nd. This also includes the 0-day vulnerability CVE-2022-2856. VPN with the addition “Pro” is new in Opera for Windows. It is a paid VPN that is not limited to the in-house browser. The previous free VPN integrated in the browser is still available.

Google has meanwhile also updated Chrome for Android (104.0.5112.97). However, it remains unclear whether the Android browser is affected by the 0-day vulnerability and whether this is now closed.
