Security updates for Chromium-based browsers – PC-WORLD

After Google Chrome 105 was released, several manufacturers of other Chromium-based browsers followed suit and also provided updates to fix several vulnerabilities.

On August 30th, Google released the new major version 105 of its Chrome browser. In it, the Google developers have eliminated 24 security vulnerabilities, including a vulnerability (CVE-2022-3038) that is classified as critical. Several manufacturers of Chromium-based browsers have now followed suit and updated their programs. So far these are Brave, Microsoft (Edge) and Vivaldi. With Opera it takes a little longer again.

Vivaldi was again the quickest to react and released an update to version 5.4.2753.45 on August 31st. However, this is based on the Chromium version 104.0.5112.112 from the Extended Stable Channel. However, the relevant security gaps have also been eliminated. So Vivaldi is sticking to its practice of skipping odd Chromium versions (like 105) over the last few months.

brave

made its browser available the next day in the updated version 1.43.88. Like Google Chrome, it is based on Chromium 105, but already on the newer version 105.0.5195.68. The update to Brave 1.43.88 also brings numerous bug fixes and improvements.

Also on September 1st, Microsoft released an update for

Edge

deployed to version 105.0.1343.25. It is based on Chromium 105.0.5195.54, like Chrome. With the new Edge version, Microsoft has also closed an Edge-specific vulnerability (CVE-2022-38012). Injected code could break out of the browser sandbox. According to Microsoft, however, an attacker would first have to “take additional measures to prepare the target environment” in order to be able to exploit the vulnerability. What this means in concrete terms is left open by Microsoft.

With Opera, as is so often the case, you take your time. The new Opera version 90.0.4480.80 from September 1st still contains the Chromium edition 104.0.5112.102 from August 16th. Opera 91 based on Chromium 105 is still in beta testing phase.

Google will release Chrome 106 on September 27th.
