Set the maximum frame rate for Nvidia graphics cards

In early 2020, Nvidia released a new driver for the Geforce graphics cards. One new feature is the feature to limit the frame rate (frames per second) for selected or all games. But why is this function useful and how do you activate it?

Especially for notebooks with Nvidia graphics chips, limiting the frame rate makes sense to prevent the GPU from working at full capacity. This saves battery and reduces heat generation. The result: you can gamble longer on the go. The limiter can also be used to combat “screen tearing”, i.e. tearing the image. This is important for all players who use a screen without image synchronization techniques such as G-Sync or Freesync.

Screen tearing occurs when the game is displayed at a higher frame rate than the refresh rate (in Hertz) of the monitor. To prevent this, the images per second can be limited to the Hertz number of the display. To activate the function, click with the right mouse button on a free space on the Windows desktop and select “NVIDIA Control Panel” from the context menu. Click Manage 3D Settings on the left side of the driver menu.

By default, you make all changes in the “Global Settings” tab. This means that the changed options will also be used in all applications and games. We will tell you below how to limit the frame rates for individual games.

In the graphics settings, scroll down a little to the “Max Frame Rate” entry. With a click on “Off” a slider appears, which allows a limitation between 40 and 240 frames per second. Alternatively, you can type in the desired number in the small window on the right – for example 60 FPS if your monitor only masters 60 Hertz. Click on “Apply” to save the settings and apply them in the future.

To define different frame rates or to restrict just individual games, switch to the “Program settings” tab. Either select the game’s or application’s EXE file from the drop-down menu on the left, or click “Add” if it is missing from the list. Navigate to the corresponding option in the graphics settings and limit the frame rate according to your requirements. Then apply the changes.

If you do not have the “Max Frame Rate” option, make sure that you have already installed driver version 441.87. You can check this in the “NVIDIA Control Panel” by clicking on “System Information” in the lower left corner.
