You should therefore use a special DNS service that blocks phishing sites and pages that have not been approved for minors. DNS stands for Domain Name Service (or Server) and describes the process used on the Internet that translates web addresses such as www.NewsABC.net into IP addresses. The DNS servers manage extensive databases that are continuously updated. Usually you access the DNS server of your Internet provider. You can also choose an alternative server, such as Google’s DNS service. Or you use a special DNS service such as OpenDNS, which makes dangerous or unsuitable sites for children and young people inaccessible.
In the Fritzbox you will find the settings for the DNS server when configuring the Internet access. Enter the addresses of the OpenDNS servers here.
The basic functions of Open DNS are free for private individuals, you can also use them without registration. However, the predefined filter lists can only be edited after you have set up a free user account. OpenDNS also offers extended services that are chargeable – for example with additional usage statistics, for mobile users and for companies.
OpenDNS offers two IP addresses for DNS servers: “18.104.22.168” and “22.214.171.124” for phishing protection (“Home”) and “126.96.36.199” and “188.8.131.52” for protection of minors, which is called “Family Shield” here. It is best to enter these addresses in your router so that all network devices are protected.
A combination of these two services is only possible to a limited extent and only with a user account. In this case, use the addresses for the Family Shield. After that, it is no longer possible to whitelist addresses in your account that are blocked by the OpenDNS youth protection system.
OpenDNS offers instructions on its website for the configuration of various end devices as well as a DNS test.
For the Fritzbox, adjust the settings for the DNS server under “Internet -› Access data ”in the“ DNS server ”tab. Activate “Use other DNSv4 servers” and enter the desired address pair. Below you will see the settings for DNSv6 servers. OpenDNS does not offer DNS servers for IPv6 addresses. However, you can enter IPv6 addresses via which the DNS requests are redirected to the IPv4 server.
The addresses are “:: ffff: d043: dede” and “:: ffff: d043: dcdc”. As soon as you have made the changes in the Fritzbox and clicked on “Apply”, the router asks for a confirmation for security reasons. To do this, please dial the specified number with the star in front of it on a connected phone and then confirm on the screen by clicking on “OK”. Or you press a button on the Fritzbox housing.
