Seven highlights from Luminar 4.3

Skylum Luminar is an extraordinary program for managing and editing photos. We show some highlights.

Skylum advertises its all-rounder Luminar primarily with the tools that use artificial intelligence. Luminar has so much more to offer. Starting with the intuitively operated image catalog to the other functions for editing photos. We have selected seven highlights from the wealth of functions and present them here:

1. Replace the sky

The “AI Sky Replacement” function shows most impressively what intelligent image processing tools can achieve. If the image contains a sky, the tool will automatically recognize it. This way you can swap the sky. Luminar already offers over a dozen sky images, including starry skies, sunset or cloudy skies. You can also use your own sky images. The result is impressive from the first click and can also be adjusted.

2. Edit portraits

With conventional tools, it takes a lot of effort to skillfully retouch a portrait. Most of the time, you need to remove blemishes, soften shiny skin, brighten eyes and digitally whiten teeth. All these individual tasks, for which you would otherwise have to mask the corresponding image areas before editing, can be done in no time with Luminar. The program automatically recognizes the parts of the face, you just have to set the effect with the appropriate sliders.

For portrait retouching, Luminar has its own work area with several intelligent tools. The most extensive is the “AI Portrait Enhancer”, which recognizes all areas of the face independently and offers appropriate correction options using a slider. A natural-looking retouch can be achieved in just a few minutes.

3. Edit landscapes

Landscape photographs often contain a hazy sky or pale colors. The colors of a sunset could also be more pronounced, for example. With the “Landscape Enhancer”, Luminar offers the option of adjusting these points quickly and easily with a natural-looking result. If you would like more creative freedom, the all-rounder also offers all the important tools that are known, for example, from Lightroom. These include, among other things, an HSL controller with which you can specifically edit colors, or a freely adjustable gradation curve.

The tools that Luminar offers for this task are as varied as the landscapes that you want to work on. In this case, the green was improved with the

4. Great picture styles with luminar looks

You can choose the right one for your shot from dozens of preset image looks. Luminar combines them in the lower bar, which already shows the effect of the looks in a preview image. You can show or hide this preview using the “Looks” button, which you can find in the top bar. For a better overview, the looks are arranged thematically, for example in “Street”, “Landscape” or “Portrait”. The effect of the effects can be softened with the slider if necessary. You can also create your own looks and download more from the Internet.

5. Include your own logo with layers

With Luminar, you can easily add your own black and white logo to a photo. This is made possible by the layer function. With it, an image with the logo can be placed over the photograph and overlaid with the image below in several ways. This is a simple example of what is possible with the layer function. In addition, simple picture montages can be created in which areas of the upper picture are hidden with the help of masks.

Quickly add a signature to the photo: You can place your own logo on the photo as an image layer, scale it appropriately and blend it with the lower layer under “Mix” with “Multiply”. In this case, the white areas are hidden.

6. Processing levels for more design freedom

Luminar offers the option of creating several processing levels. All editing tools can be created again on a separate level. Because in this way you can apply several luminar looks to one image as a simple example. Image effects such as a color key, in which the subject is displayed in color and the background in black and white, can also be created quickly and easily.

Levels expand the creative possibilities enormously. In this simple example of a color key, we have created two processing levels, each with a luminar look, a black and white and a color look. The motif was highlighted in color with a mask.

7. Convenient operation

The most extensive functions are worthless if a program is difficult to use. That can’t happen with Luminar. Even the first contact with this all-rounder for photos is intuitive and the basic functions were quickly discovered. Experienced users will also benefit from the simple way of using Luminar. Luminar offers many control options and keyboard commands that those who switch from Lightroom, for example, are already familiar with.

Newbies can quickly find their way around with Luminar. The photo browser is self-explanatory and the image editor has a logically understandable structure. In this illustration, a film strip and the Luminar Looks were shown in addition to a single image.
