Since January 1st, 2022: These postage prices apply to letters, postcards, parcels etc. – overview






As of January 1, 2022, Deutsche Post has increased letter postage. Not only letters and postcards became more expensive! Packages are a special case. All new prices in clear tables.

Since January 1, 2022, these postage prices apply:

  • The standard letter costs 0.85 euros – five cents more than before

  • The compact letter costs 1 euro – five cents more expensive

  • The large letter costs 1.60 euros – five cents more expensive

  • The maxi letter costs 2.75 euros – five cents more expensive

  • The postcard costs EUR 0.70, which is ten cents more than before

  • The prices for registered mail and registered post will increase by 15 cents to EUR 2.65 and EUR 2.35 respectively.

Matching stamps

Deutsche Post is offering new stamps and supplementary stamps to match the postage increase. These have been available in post offices and online at www.deutschepost.de since December 2, 2021. For example, you need 0.05 cent stamps to make existing 80 cent stamps fit for the new standard letter postage. Or 10 cent stamps to make existing 60 cent stamps suitable for the new 70 cent postage for postcards.

Customers can still buy the postage for their letters and postcards via the Post & DHL app or frank the consignments with the mobile stamp via the app. Existing stamps as well as existing supplementary stamps from previous years can continue to be used for franking items with Deutsche Post. An exchange is not necessary.

More postage increases

In addition, Deutsche Post also increased some prices for products that, unlike the letter postage mentioned above, do not require the prior approval of the Federal Network Agency. The prices for the rose as well

shipment of books and goods

by five cents to 1.95 euros for the “Bücher- und Warensendung 500” and to 2.25 euros for the “Bücher- und Warensendung 1000”.

At the

forwarding service

the online price for the 12-month product rose from EUR 26.90 for private customers to EUR 30.90. The online price for the 6-month version, on the other hand, remains unchanged at EUR 23.90 (private customers). In the future, customers can also order the 6-month service in the branch, but then at higher prices than online: 26.90 euros.

Package prices also rose, but not for private customers

Effective January 1, 2022, Deutsche Post DHL also increased the

Package prices for business customers.

These price increases apply both to business customers with list prices and to business customers with individually agreed conditions. The price increase particularly affects heavy parcels over 20 kilograms. Swiss Post justified this by saying that sorting and delivery required significantly more effort. However, the increases do not affect the national and international DHL Express business.

The really important information for private users is different:

The prices for DHL parcel shipping by private customers remain unchanged.

Long approval process

The postage increase was preceded by a lengthy approval and test procedure, you can read more about this in the report Deutsche Post may increase letter postage: That’s what letters will cost from January 1st, 2022. Finally, on December 10, 2021, the Federal Network Agency had “provisionally approved the new letter postage of Deutsche Post AG from January 1, 2022. The final approval is expected to be given in the spring,” wrote the Federal Network Agency at the time.

Reason for price increase

Deutsche Post gave the reason for the price adjustments as “cost increases due to higher wage and transport costs as well as the inflation rate, which has risen sharply in recent months. The pandemic-related additional expenses in the business premises and in delivery, which enable a secure postal supply for all customers in Germany, have burdened Deutsche Post with considerable costs.
