He must have unprecedented energy: Abboud. Abboud not only serves us perfectly in hotel restaurant Puur Saen, but suddenly he is also standing behind the bar like a jackass. What do we want to end our dinner with? Something with that delicious Zaanse liqueur again?
We had started our meal on his advice, prosecco with a touch of this local brew. That hit me hard! Fortunately, we can then muffle the alcohol with dishes that are unprecedentedly delicious for a restaurant hotel, such as the fried sea bream with pappardelle. Later we discover that there are many real Zaanse liqueurs, such as the infamous Zaanse Slobber.
The hotel cannot be missed when driving up. The facade with the stack of seventy Zaan houses can be called iconic, whether you like it or not. The American CNN included the property in the Top 12 of the most unusual hotels in the world. The design is by Wilfried van Winden.
Inside, many green Zaanse elements can still be found on the ground floor near the reception, bar and restaurant Puur Saen. The hotel rooms, on the other hand, are remarkably sleek; only a large photo wall recalls the history of this special region.
We stay in a spacious Founders Junior Suite with a separate sitting room and a sauna and whirlpool in the bathroom. All attributes for a successful sauna session are neatly present, including instructions for use and bathrobes and slippers. You can cool off well under the enormous rain shower (but you can also just take a hot shower of course …).
Secretly we expect the hospitable Abboud again at breakfast, who was ubiquitous last night. However, his colleagues turn out to be just as hospitable. Also now a festive glass of bubbles is available. That goes well with the salmon served at the table, the cold cuts and sandwiches and the soft-boiled egg on request. By the way, we have already been able to drink Nespresso in the hotel room, because those facilities are all there.
Remarkably enough, little or nothing of the illustrious exterior can be found in the sleek rooms. This was probably done on purpose, because not everyone can appreciate the Zaanse style. Large photo walls portray the history of the region.
In the middle of Stadshart Zaandam with almost two hundred shops and the station. You can easily reach the heart of Amsterdam by train.
Really very special. From the receptionist to the staff in the restaurant, they really do their utmost to make you feel at home.
Room rates from 59 euros per night (including breakfast).
