Belarus has been unsettled since his re-election last summer. 66-year-old Lukashenko won with 80 percent of the vote, but according to the opposition, fraud has been widespread. There are many protests and athletes have also been active. They were labeled traitors by the president.

At the end of last year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided to suspend Lukashenko for the time being, so that he is not welcome at Olympic events as long as the case is not dealt with. “The IOC has come to the conclusion that the current leaders in Belarus have not adequately protected athletes from political discrimination within the national Olympic committee, the sports federations and the sports themselves,” explained IOC president Thomas Bach. The IOC also imposed a suspension on Lukashenko’s son Viktor, then still in office as vice-chairman.
