Sony presents sales figures for PS5 and games

The hardware sales of the Playstation 5 are slowly starting to go well, but Sony was able to sell significantly fewer games.

Business with the Playstation 5 is going so slowly. After a few months ago all consoles were sold out as soon as new contingents appeared, there are now apparently significantly more consoles. Fast access is usually still necessary. Sony has now published the official sales figures for the PS5 for the period from April to June 2022. According to this, around 2.4 million consoles were sold worldwide during this period. In the same period last year, there were 2.3 million consoles. The reason for the increased sales are better delivery conditions for PS5 components.

But fewer games sold

Since the start of sales in November 2020, Sony has sold 21.7 million devices. The Japanese group, on the other hand, is seriously concerned about the sale of games for PS4 and PS5. A total of 47.1 million games were sold in the last quarter, compared to 63.6 million in the same period last year. In addition, players would have spent 15 percent less time with their console than a year ago. The lull in top-class new releases is responsible for this. The lockdowns should have lured more players to the console a year ago.

Lower profit forecast

Sony therefore has high hopes for the release of new games. A remaster of “Spider-Man” for the PC will be released on August 12th. On the other hand, the remake of “The Last of Us” for Playstation 5 will be released on September 2nd. Another blockbuster is expected with “God of War Ragnarök” for PS4 and PS5 on November 9th. Nevertheless, Sony had to correct its profit forecast for the financial year running until March 2023 downwards: Net profit will fall by around 9.3 percent to an expected 5.8 billion euros.
