South Korea: Games in Tokyo are an opportunity for conversation with Pyongyang

“The Games scheduled for this year could serve as an opportunity for dialogue between South Korea and Japan, South and North Korea, North Korea and Japan, and North Korea and the United States,” Moon said in Seoul. at a commemoration of a protest against the Japanese colonial rule of his country at the beginning of the last century.

Moon also stated that he wants to support Japan as much as possible to bring the Games to a successful conclusion. “I hope both Korea and Japan will be able to recover our Covid-19-affected economy,” Moon said. “And that together we can create a new order in the post-Covid-19 era.”

South Korea has high diplomatic expectations for the Olympic Games. The government hopes that these can provide an opening to revive relations with North Korea. Relations between the two countries have soured since negotiations between the United States and Pyongyang over the decommissioning of North Korea’s nuclear program stalled in 2019.

According to observers, Moon wants a repeat of the ‘success’ of the Winter Games in Pyeongchang three years ago. Then there was talk of rapprochement between Seoul and Pyongyang. Athletes from both countries walked into the stadium under the name of ‘Korea’ at the opening ceremony under a common flag. The women’s ice hockey team also consisted of players from both countries.
