In South Korea, two people died after receiving AstraZeneca’s corona vaccine. Both individuals had pre-existing conditions, but the country is investigating whether there is a link to the vaccine.
One of those who died is a 63-year-old man with cerebrovascular disease. He developed symptoms four days after the nurses gave him the vaccine. “The man suffered from a high fever,” said Jeong Eun-kyeong, director of the Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), during a press conference. According to the Yonhap news agency, the man eventually died of septicemia and pneumonia.
Deaths are investigated
The second person to die shortly after receiving the vaccine is in his 50s with heart disease and diabetes. He died after several heart attacks. Those attacks came one day after he received the AstraZeneca vaccine.
The KDCA has announced that it is investigating the deaths. The agency does not currently want to confirm whether there is a causal link between the deaths and the vaccine. The KDCA said earlier that it will give compensation of $ 383,466 to the next of kin of people who have died as a result of a corona vaccine.
“The KDCA is conducting an epidemiological investigation with the relevant local authorities to confirm a link with the vaccinations,” the agency said. A spokeswoman for AstraZeneca has said the company does not currently wish to comment on the deaths.
Eun-kyeong notes that to date there have been no deaths directly linked to a vaccination with the vaccine from Pfizer or AstraZeneca. During a commentary, he emphasized to the population that a vaccination is only a good idea if your health is in order.
Figures from the KDCA show that so far 217 people have experienced side effects after receiving the vaccine, including three cases with a severe allergic reaction.
South Korea started the vaccination campaign last week. According to the most recent figures, 85,904 people have already been vaccinated with AstraZeneca. 1,524 people have already received the Pfizer vaccine.
