But the desktop doesn’t just have to be prettier. With tools like BgInfo it even becomes informative. In the background you can see information about hardware, Windows or the network status. Depending on the wallpaper and mood, you emphasize this text information or conceal it rather unobtrusively. The practical Launchy tool, for example, finds data at lightning speed via a quick start bar. And RocketDock brings a little bit of Mac design to the Windows computer – without any macOS.
Stardock Fences is also very practical. The small freeware program creates fenced areas (hence the name; Fences = fences) on the desktop. You can adjust their transparency and color to the wallpaper using the slider. And in these fences you store thematically sorted desktop shortcuts and files on the desktop. For example, you can quickly find Photoshop in the “Image editing” fence and the recently created Excel table quickly in “Temporary documents”. The naming and sorting is entirely up to you. Another advantage: You can move entire fences with all the files they contain on the desktop and rearrange them. And by double-clicking on a free space on the desktop, you can hide all fences and icons and enjoy your desktop background.
