Football: Feyenoord practices shortened twice against German clubs

10.54 am: Feyenoord plays two shortened exhibition games in the run-up to the new season, against Borussia Dortmund and MSV Duisburg. The exhibition games with the German opponents, played in Duisburg, are part of the Cup of Traditions tournament.

Both duels will be played on Saturday August 22 and last only one hour. The match against Dortmund starts at 4:45 PM and the duel with Duisburg at 6:00 PM.

“It is not yet clear whether there will be an audience at the friendly matches. MSV Duisburg is busy talking to the local authorities to come up with a hygiene protocol, but it is not yet clear whether this will be finished in time, ”reports the Rotterdam club.

Feyenoord also practices against Sparta (August 9) and FC Twente (August 16). Those games are played in De Kuip.

Wheels: Van der Breggen explores World Championship course

10.25 am: Anna van der Breggen travels to Switzerland after the Strade Bianche on Saturday to explore the World Cup route. The Boels-Dolmans rider sees opportunities for the tough World Cup round in and around Martigny. After that exploration, Van der Breggen will travel with teammate Chantal Blaak to the Austrian Kühtai for an altitude of three weeks.

The Strade Bianche, which she won two years ago, follows three races in Spain. “Actually, this four-game block is a bit too far from the real main goals of my season. This is also due to the loss of a number of competitions, including the Boels Ladies Toer. I hope to really peak in September. The European Championship time trial, the Giro and the World Cup on the road are my big goals. Although I also ride the NK on the road in Drenthe, the GP Plouay, the European Championship on the road and the World Championship time trial. ”

After the World Cup, Van der Breggen will ride the classics Waalse Pijl, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Amstel Gold Race, Tour of Flanders and possibly Paris-Roubaix. “All competitions that are good for me and races that I have already won in the past. I wonder how fresh I am during that period. It is a busy and intensive program from the end of August. That is why I cannot say whether I will start in Paris-Roubaix at the moment. ”

Cycling: Mollema resumes season in Route d’Occitanie

10.23 am: Bauke Mollema resumes his season on Saturday in the Route d’Occitanie, a French stage race from August 1 to 4. His team Trek-Segafredo has included the Groninger in the selection alongside Australians Richie Porte and Will Clarke, among others.

Mollema (33) rode his last race on March 1, the Royal Bernard Drome Classic. After that, the corona virus halted the cycling season. In the stage race in the south of France, previously known as Route du Sud, the British Ineos also participates with a strong team. The 2019 Colombian Tour winner Egan Bernal and four-time Tour winner Chris Froome receive support from the Dutchman Dylan van Baarle, among others.

Basketball: LeBron James helps Lakers past Clippers to restart NBA season

7:58 am: With 12 seconds left, basketball player LeBron James made the winning shot for Los Angeles Lakers against fellow townsman Clippers on Thursday. It was 103-101 at the restart of the NBA season. The clubs have gathered at the fully enclosed ESPN Wide World of Sports complex near Orlando.

Partly because of the strict corona measures, the Clippers missed two players: reserve guard Lou Williams is quarantined after leaving the bubble in Florida, forward Montrezl Harrell left his squad on July 17 due to private circumstances, and can only return after isolation. Before both teams from Los Angeles came into action, Utah Jazz had already won against New Orleans Pelicans, also narrowly: 106-104. All four teams knelt before the duels to the National Anthem in protest of racism and unequal treatment by police officers.

The NBA season stalled on March 11 because of the corona virus.

The Lakers’ top shooter was not James (16 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists) but Anthony Davis who came to 34 points. James was not at his best with only six successful throws from nineteen tries. The Clippers received most points (30) from Paul George, but he missed the chance to win with a three-pointer in his ultimate attempt in the buzzer.

The Lakers lead in the Western Conference with 50 victories against 14 defeats. LA Clippers (44-21) is second.
