Cycling: Pieters two years longer at Boels-Dolmans

12.22 pm: Amy Pieters has extended her contract with Boels-Dolmans by two years. The 28-year-old North Holland is now fixed until the end of 2022 with the team that will continue as SD Worx next year. Pieters won the European title on the road in Alkmaar last year, but is also successful on the track.

At the end of February she extended the world title on the coupling rate with Kirsten Wild at the World Championships track cycling in Berlin. The daughter of former cyclist Peter Pieters will therefore mainly focus on the Olympic Games in Tokyo next year.

“In recent years I have just seen that the combination of track and road works out well for me. It is precisely because of this combination that I started to perform better in both areas, ”says Pieters. “I will certainly also ride road races in 2021, but if a choice has to be made, it will always be Tokyo. For two years, the team gave me the freedom to focus optimally on the track. In 2022 I hope to thank the team for that with a strong season on the road. ”

Anna van der Breggen and Chantal Blaak recently extended their contract with Boels-Dolmans. Reigning Olympic champion Van der Breggen says goodbye after the Tokyo Games, Blaak in the spring of 2022. Both former world champions then continue as team leaders at SD Worx.

Boels-Dolmans also extended Lonneke Uneken’s contract, which team manager Danny Stam regarded as “the greatest talent in Dutch women’s cycling.” The 20-year-old from Groningen is now with the team until the end of 2024.

Football: Dortmund has Can back against Wolfsburg

11.02 am: Trainer Lucien Favre from Borussia Dortmund can have Emre Can again on Saturday against VfL Wolfsburg. The German midfielder was missing last week when the Bundesliga resumed against Schalke 04. Without Can, international of the ‘Mannschaft’, Dortmund won the derby 4-0.

The yellow-black brigade of Favre is in second place in the German football league, four points behind league-leader Bayern Munich. On Tuesday, the numbers 1 and 2 of the rankings meet in the empty Signal Iduna Park of Dortmund. “But before we start talking about Bayern, we have to win in Wolfsburg,” said Favre, who doesn’t yet have captain Marco Reus and Axel Witsel at his disposal. The 17-year-old wing striker Giovanni Reyna, who would start in the base for the first time last week but had to drop out injured during the warm-up, can participate again.

At Wolfsburg, striker Wout Weghorst returns to the team after a suspension. Zonder Weghorst won the number 6 of the Bundesliga last week at FC Augsburg: 1-2.

Gymnastics: KNGU extends contracts coaches until after Games 2021

08.49 am: The Dutch gymnastics union KNGU has extended the contracts with the national coaches Bram van Bokhoven and Gerben Wiersma until the end of 2021. The coaches Jeroen Jacobs, Daniël Knibbeler, Vincent Wevers and Janneke Wiersma were also told that after the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics, they still may stay at least a year longer.

The contracts of the six coaches expired at the end of this year. As a result of the corona pandemic, the Games have been moved from next summer to the summer of 2021. “In this difficult time and in everything that is still to come, I really need these top coaches”, says technical director Mark Meijer of the KNGU. “Together we want to perform as well as possible in Tokyo. We have therefore extended the agreements with our six Olympic coaches until the end of next year. ”

The Dutch women’s gymnastics team led by Wiersma has qualified as a team for the Games. Bart Deurloo already has an Olympic ticket from the men’s team of Van Bokhoven. Epke Zonderland is also heading for participation in the Games.
