Sprinter Onyema Adigida won the title in the 200 meters at the Dutch indoor athletics championships in 20.90. With that time he remained 13 hundredths above the Dutch record of 20.77, which has been held by Patrick van Balkom since 2001. After Van Balkom and Guus Hoogmoed he is the third Dutchman ever in this sprint distance.
The 21-year-old Adigida, European junior champion in the 200 meters in 2019, had set his sights on the Dutch record in the Omnisport in Apeldoorn. “I really wanted that record, because I had to make up for it. The 60 meters on Saturday didn’t go well,” he said after the race.
Adigida will not be admired at the European Indoor Championships in two weeks in Poland. The 200 meters is not part of the competition program. He can focus on the outdoor season. “My goals are clear; a medal at the European Championship under 23 and reach the limit for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.”
The limit has been set at 20.24, even more than his personal best of 20.82. “But that time comes naturally when I start running competitions. I don’t think I should be too focused on that time, otherwise you will hunt and it usually ends wrong.”
