Employees of the academic hospitals in Amsterdam (VU and AMC), Leiden, Utrecht, Groningen, Rotterdam and Maastricht are participating in the strike, only Radboudumc in Nijmegen is not participating.
So-called Sunday services are run in many departments. This means that all planable care is canceled and only emergency care is available.
Different departments are closed per hospital, such as the operating rooms, radiology, laboratories and various nursing departments. All emergency care, oncology, heart monitoring and maternity incubator departments will continue to operate. The promotion lasts for 24 hours.
Fair working conditions
With the strike, hospital employees demand ‘fairer working conditions, such as a decent wage increase’ for all employees and good agreements to reduce the workload. “Never before have there been such large-scale strikes in the Netherlands by employees of academic hospitals”, according to FNV.
The striking employees do not have to be bored. According to the health care association, various activities are organized for them, such as a pub quiz, ping pong competitions and a ‘coffee-cake moment’ with patients. There is also a stage program with various speakers.
