Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier announced in a conversation with the “Rheinische Post” that there will be a central event on April 18 at which the people who have died of Corona will be remembered. He calls on the citizens to pause on this day to give the bereaved a voice and to bid farewell to the dead with dignity.

“Death is not a statistical quantity, but a tragic reality,” Steinmeier said in an interview. “It is not only the subject of individual grief – we are also aware of something else: an almost suppressed vulnerability of our existence. We have nurtured our individuality and now feel how existentially we depend on others. “

The bereaved as well as the entire government will take part in the memorial ceremony. “Because of Corona, unfortunately only a limited number of participants can be there, and many plans remain uncertain,” Steinmeier told the “Rheinische Post”. But there will be a live broadcast of the event.

Steinmeier had already called on people in January to put a candle in their window to commemorate the corona dead. But this silent symbol still needs an appropriate form of public commemoration, said the Federal President. The central commemoration will take place on April 18th in Berlin.
