Study: How applicant behavior changed in the Corona crisis

A survey by the job portal Stepstone shows: More than half of job seekers are currently looking for jobs.

In general, however, there is a mixed mood: only 14 percent believe that their job opportunities will deteriorate in the long term.

However, the application process could change – and there are positive sides.

The consequences of the corona crisis on the labor market are clear. In April this year, 10.1 million people were on short-time work and 2.644 million people were unemployed. But the prospects for the future are anything but good. The retail association alone expects that 50,000 businesses will not survive the corona crisis. The current situation is characterized by uncertainty.

According to a survey by the job portal Stepstone, which, like, belongs to Axel Springer, jobseekers are not pessimistic about the future. Instead, the mood is mixed: At 55 percent, more than half of those questioned said that they were looking for more jobs. However, the majority – 58 percent – do not believe that it will be more difficult to find a job in the long term.

Applicants have become more flexible

However, the data also show that times are changing. About 30 percent would be willing to move for a job; slightly more than half of the respondents are currently not applying because they do not expect feedback. A third of the participants have conducted a job interview over the past few weeks; about one in four have a video conference. Only 14 percent report a corona-related cancellation of the interview.

For Tobias Zimmermann, labor market expert at Stepstone, the switch to digital recruitment processes offers advantages for applicants: “You not only save time to get there, but also have a conversation in your familiar environment. However, a professional demeanor and good preparation are just as important as in a classic job interview. “It can’t hurt to simulate a telephone or video interview beforehand with your partner or friends to adapt to the new situation, he advises.

In addition, those interested in jobs are more flexible, not only in terms of the type of interview, but also in terms of the job in general. At 56 percent, the majority are willing to look for another job or even a job in another industry.
