TCR Germany: Engstler is clearly on course for the title

What a weekend for Luca Engstler! Germany’s top touring car hope was the outstanding driver in the ADAC TCR Germany at the Lausitzring. Although he had never competed in a TCR racing car there, the young Allgäu-born driver crossed the finish line as the winner in his Hyundai i30 N TCR.
“The joy after the two victories this weekend is huge. But since we still have a long journey home to the Allgäu, we will only be able to celebrate briefly, ”says Engstler, who already scored a double victory at the season opener in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.
With four successes in the six races of the season, the son of ex-World Touring Car Starter Franz Engstler is clearly on course for the title. The Wiggensbacher has 186 points on the account and thus at least 59 points in the overall standings over the first pursuer, Honda driver Dominik Fugel. Third-placed Eric Salvini (Cupra Leon TCR) has 126 points.

Luca Engstler celebrates a double victory at the Lausitzring.

The decisive factor for the race was Engstler’s perfect start, who took the lead from the pole setter, his Danish team-mate Martin Andersen, from second place.

Behind them there was the usual start frenzy in the chasing field. Already in turn one, the Cupra Leon Competición TCR from Gux308; nter Benninger (Wimmer Werk Motorsport), the VW Golf GTI TCR from Szymon Ladniak (JP Motorsport) and the Hyundai i30 N TCR from Patrick Sing (RaceSing) collided. The race ended prematurely for all three.
As on the day before, Engstler kept calm after the necessary safety car phase, won the restart and was able to easily break away from his pursuers. The duo from the Engstler team then clinched an undisputed double victory for Hyundai.

“I knew even before the race that the start today would be the be-all and end-all. When it started, I didn’t pay any attention to Martin. My focus was only on the perfect pressure point of my clutch and on the traffic lights. I managed that very well, ”said the 21-year-old from the Allgäu, analyzing the decisive scene after the award ceremony.

Behind the two Hyundai drivers, an exciting four-way battle for the other places with Honda driver Dominik Fugel, Nico Gruber (Hyundai Team Engstler), Eric Scalvini (Wimmer Werk Motorsport) in the Cupra Leon Competición TCR and Marcel Fugel in another Honda developed. Dominik Fugel finally secured the last free place on the podium.

The next two ADAC TCR Germany races will take place next weekend (17-19 September) at the Hockenheimring as part of the ADAC Racing Weekend.

Championship leadership defended: Ricardo Feller and Christopher Mies

In the ADAC GT Masters, Ricardo Feller and Christopher Mies in the Audi R8 LMS from Land Motorsport raced to the halftime championship with a victory in race one at the Lausitzring. On Sunday, sixth place was enough to defend the newly won championship lead. Feller / Mies are now three points ahead of their closest rivals, the Mercedes drivers Raffaele Marciello and Maximilian Buhk (Team Landgraf – HTP / WWR).

On Sunday Igor Walilko and Jules Gounon won in the AMG Mercedes GT3. Both completed a flawless race and thus repeated the success of the Zakspeed team from the previous year.
