Spanish tennis star Paula Badosa is one of the corona cases in Melbourne’s ‘tennis bubble’. She has announced this herself via social media. 23-year-old Badosa is number 67 in the world.
“I have some bad news to report: today I was informed that I tested positive. I do not feel well and have symptoms,” Badosa wrote in a statement. “I was transferred to another hotel, where I am in isolation under medical supervision. I hope I will recover soon.”
In recent days, more players would have tested positive, but names were not announced by the authorities and organization. On Tuesday, tournament director Craig Tiley also denied a statement from earlier that day mentioning a number of positive tennis players. News came on Wednesday that again – or as Tiley claims for the first time – tennis players have delivered a positive test.
There is uncertainty about the number of infections. Several results have been adjusted, because it concerns residual material from previous infections. The people are then not contagious.
The Australian Open starts on Monday, February 8.
