She is ahead of her time: Die Fast charging station Terra 360 from the Swedish-Swiss electrical company ABB sets a world record in fast charging. With up to 360 kW, it pours the energy into the battery of a plugged-in electric car. For comparison: the subsidized wallbox at home has a maximum of 11 kW, and the Tesla motorway supercharger currently has 250 (soon 300) kW. According to ABB, this should mean every commercially available electric car battery full again in a maximum of 15 minutes be.
The new Terra 360 charging station from ABB offers four fast charging points with a maximum of 360 kW.
The catch: So far, no electric car has been able to cope with such enormous charging capacities. Above all, being able to charge really quickly Luxury vehicles: The batteries are included in the current charging master, the Porsche Taycan (from 85,543 euros) 270 kW rechargeable. Hyundai is taking a big step with the new Ioniq 5 (from 41,900 euros) 800 volt electrical system has – but even it only manages up to 220 kW charging power.

Most e-cars stay way below that. The VW ID.3 only “digests” up to 120 kW. the electrified S-Class, called by Mercedes EQS and just before the market launch, is to receive a 107 kWh battery, the one Charging power of up to 200 kW coped, announced Daimler on request. Charging station manufacturer ABB assumes “that in five years e-cars will be able to cope with our maximum charging speeds and use the full bandwidth of the stations.”
However, when all charging points are occupied, each e-car only receives up to 90 kW of charging current.
The Terra 360 charging station will be available on the European market at the end of 2021. Up to four vehicles can simultaneously draw energy from their CCS or CHAdeMo plugs. “The maximum output of 360 kW relates to a car. If four cars are charging at the same time, the output is 90 kW each“says ABB spokesman Eike Christian Meuter.
An advertising display is also possible on the charging station
The display of the charging station is also accessible for wheelchair users, highlights ABB. If desired, the public power source can also be individualized in the pump design, e.g. B. in company colors and with lettering and logos. This brings ABB into discussion as an infrastructure provider for company fleets. The stand space is relatively small, so that even narrow locations offer space. Also a Extra display for advertising the manufacturer offers.
Even the new Hyundai Ioniq 5 cannot fully exploit the power of the new ABB Terra 360: It charges with a maximum of 220 kW.
ABB has been active in the electromobility market since 2010 and has sold more than 460,000 charging stations to date – including more than 21,000 fast charging stations.
