The Audi Q3 in the used car test

Clothes make the man! This applies not only to Gottfried Keller’s story of the same name, but also and especially to SUV models from the premium league. The first Audi Q3 generation started in 2011 and quickly became a sales success, despite the premium surcharges compared to its technology twin, the VW Tiguan. Four years after the model was phased out, the high demand for used models continues.

Our test car from Autohus in Gyhum (near Bremen) has the sports package, shimmers in elegant glacier white metallic and comes from the facelift series presented at the end of 2014. The compactSUV with the 150 hp petrol engine, which is completely sufficient in every situation (including barely noticeable cylinder deactivation and the Euro 6 emissions standard) as well as a few extras according to the Schwacke database in November 2017, a whopping 43,175 euros. Now, with 146,627 kilometers on the clock, it would be available for 18,980 euros. Is the deal worth it?

Audi Q3 used: The high mileage of the SUV is not visible

Its considerable mileage is not noticeable in our test car. The six-speed dual-clutch transmission S tronic shows a slight weakness when moving off, but then sorts the gears without any unpleasant shift jerks. The optional Drive Select chassis masters a pleasant balancing act between comfort and dynamics, rolls off without rumbling overtones. The space available is less of a reason to buy: in the front you sit high and well, but in the rear the designers sacrificed some space for the look, so that families are more likely to squint at the larger Q5 due to the cramped space in the back seat.

Still, staying on board is 4.39 meters long SUV-model pleasant. The brand-typical high interior quality is convincing. Nothing crackles and no surface looks worn. The sports seats with electric lumbar support and extendable leg rest would take half the mileage. And the security fits: in the Euro NCAP crash test it got the best Q3 2011 full five stars. Lane, steering and parking assistants were available, each cost[1]but always extra charge.

All-wheel drive is only available with petrol engines from 170 hp

Where can you feel the constructive age of the first built up to 2018 Q3-Generation? It’s the details: the infotainment system does have navigation and Bluetooth connectivity, but it only has a small 6.5-inch screen with no mirror or touch functions. And even if Q sounds like quattro, this one drives Q3 as a front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive (with a Haldex clutch as in other group all-wheel drive vehicles with transverse engines) was only available on the petrol versions from 170 hp.

Anyone who does not constantly exhaust the lush trailer load of 1800 kilograms or lives in alpine regions should hardly experience any bad traction problems. Many ex-company cars were ordered as TDI (120 hp to 184 hp) (until autumn 2014 only Euro 5). The 2.0 TFSI (211/220 hp) works amazingly well. Of the RS Q3 is a five-cylinder monster with up to 367 hp, but it is also in a league of its own when it comes to costs.
