High blood pressure can lead to heart attacks and strokes. Therefore, people at risk should measure their blood pressure. We present smart blood pressure monitors for the upper arm and wrist that send their data to an app. The advantages of the app are obvious: you not only see the data in it more clearly than on the display of the blood pressure monitor, but you can also see the course of your measured values perfectly. Apps therefore offer a similar added value to blood pressure monitors as
also with body composition scales.
Important:
Some blood pressure monitors also offer an EKG function that is comparable to the EKG on the Apple Watch. This can be used to detect atrial fibrillation. Blood pressure monitors without an EKG function only recognize irregular heartbeats.
Blood pressure monitors for the upper arm
Withings has two smart blood pressure monitors on offer: the BPM Connect and the BPM Core. But there is a significant price difference separating the two.
Withings BPM Connect
BPM Connect
is an inflatable upper arm cuff that transmits its measurement data (systolic and diastolic blood pressure as well as heart rate / pulse) via Bluetooth directly to the app when the smartphone is near the BPM Connect. Alternatively, the measurement data is sent to the Withings servers via WLAN. From there, the measurement data can then be synchronized with the smartphone. At the push of a button, BPM Connect starts the measurement process and an LED display directly on the device shows the blood pressure. You can see the complete history of your measurement data in the Health-Mate app, as can the
Withings cardio scale
uses. With the iOS version, the measurement data can be passed on to the doctor.

Beurer also offers several blood pressure monitors with an app connection. Most Beurer models use batteries for power supply, while the BM 85 uses rechargeable batteries as a power source. There is an important difference between the models when it comes to app support: some devices transfer their data to the Beurer Cardio Expert, while other blood pressure monitors send their data to the Beurer Health Manager app. The latter supports numerous other Beurer devices, such as the body composition monitor
Beurer BF 105.

The Beurer BM 93 blood pressure monitor is the latest upper arm blood pressure monitor (cuff size 23 – 43 cm) from Beurer. It calculates average values and detects atrial fibrillation and, above all, has an EKG finger sensor. It also enables an electrocardiogram to be created. This is a 1-channel EKG, like the one that the Apple Watch can create. The measured values are transferred to the iOS or Android app via Bluetooth. The device should actually be available from May 2020

With the
Omron Evolv
In contrast to the X4 and X7, you get a stylish all-in-one device. The display device is no longer required and is replaced by the smartphone app. You can also see the current values on a display that is located directly on the cuff. The more stylish and compact design compared to the X4 and X7 is bought by the Evolv with a limited range of functions: only 100 measurements for one user, no diabetes validation and neither LED traffic light validation nor average value function.
Omron Alexa skill for measuring blood pressure
Omron’s Alexa skills for Amazon Echo, Amazon Fire TV and other Alexa-compatible devices are controlled via the Omron Connect app, which in turn is synchronized with the blood pressure monitors via Bluetooth. Alexa can use the skill to compare measured values from different dates and times or compare the current measured value with the last highest or lowest measured value. On command, average values are calculated or the last blood pressure readings read out.
To activate the Omron Skill, users need the Alexa app and the Omron Connect app. To get information about their heart health, they then need to ask Alexa to open the Omron Connect app.
