In 2020, sales of electric cars in France reach a historic milestone with more than 110,000 registrations recorded. In December alone, more than 20,000 units were sold with a record penetration rate.
Electricity rounds off 2020 with historic results. According to data provided by the Committee of French Automobile Manufacturers (CCFA), 20,744 new electric cars were registered in France during the month of December. An all-time record that allows electrics to capture 13.6% of new vehicle sales over the past month. While we will have to wait for the publication of the Avere France barometer to discover the results of the different models in detail, some are already known. This is notably the case of the Renault ZOE, which beats its individual record with 5,978 registrations, but also of the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Tesla Model 3, which total respectively 2,550 and 878 units sold over the month.
As for plug-in hybrids, the atmosphere is also festive despite the many controversies. 15,119 vehicles were sold in December. A record for this rapidly growing segment which represented 8.1% of new cars registered over the month.

6.4% average market share
Over the year as a whole, the electric car registered 110,912 registrations, representing an average market share of 6.4% and an increase of 169% compared to last year. The undisputed leader in the segment, the ZOE has accumulated 37,409 registrations over the year and represents 34% of the market.
For the plug-in hybrid, the progress is even more impressive. Driven by strong momentum on the supply side and the introduction of the new ecological bonus, the segment grew from 18,592 registrations in 2019 to 74,587 in 2020, an increase of 300% for an average market share of 4, 5%.
Cumulatively, the electric and plug-in hybrid have a total of 185,499 registrations, or 11% of all new passenger vehicles sold in 2020.
