The German bicycle manufacturer and retailer Canyon has introduced a new racing bike: the new Ultimate of the fifth model generation is intended to appeal to road cyclists who are looking for a classic bike for the mountains and racing. The Ultimate is Canyon’s most successful road bike. In the range of the bike mail order company from Koblenz, the Ultimate platform sorts itself between the long-distance racer Endurace and the flat land racer Aeroad; a road bike for mountain stages and criterium races. According to Canyon, the goal when developing the 5th generation of the race bike was “a timeless balance of weight, rigidity, aerodynamics, comfort and robustness.”

At first glance, the bike is very similar to the previous version, which has been used successfully for many years. Nevertheless, the frame is a new development, the new, more angular fork and the clearer lines in the steering head and bottom bracket area are striking. Of course, Canyon also has numbers ready that show a performance plus compared to the previous version: In the wind tunnel, the aerodynamics experts at Swiss Side found an advantage of 10 watts (5 watts with rider) and although the frame construction has been reinforced, the top equipment (Canyon Ultimate CFR Di2) just 6.3 kilograms. We measured the Ultimate CF SLX Di2, which was made available to us as a test bike, at 7.2 kilograms.
In addition, the frame now allows tires up to a width of 32 millimeters, an advantage in terms of comfort. Of course, the new Ultimate has a modern cockpit area with cables and cables running inside, and the cockpit should also be particularly easy to adjust. Also interesting: The geometry has been revised and is now the same as the Aeroad model.
