The national football team will meet Austria on Wednesday evening at the Josy Barthel stadium. Faced with a match that promises to be difficult, the coach of the team nevertheless intends not to burn all its strengths and compensate with “the right attitude”.

(ASdN with Bob Hemmen) – Before the national football team face Cyprus and Azerbaijan, the Luxembourgers will play a test match on Wednesday evening. The kick-off against Austria will be given at 8:30 p.m. at the Josy Barthel stadium under the eyes of only 100 spectators.

If the stakes are not settled, the match will nevertheless be difficult for the players of the Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF). “We won’t be playing in the best configuration and Austria is certainly better than us physically,” said Luc Holtz. But the coach of the team wants to be positive: “With the right attitude, you can compensate a lot of things”.

The coach and the Luxembourg eleven meet on November 11 against Austria. Before going on two other matches against the footballers of Cyprus and the Azerbaijan team.

In addition, the 51-year-old coach would like to take advantage of this meeting “to give time to certain players”. “The active players of the BGL League have not played a match in recent weeks,” he said before adding that practice remains essential to maintain level. And with a few regulars unavailable, Luc Holtz’s options are limited.

The absence of key players in fact makes the preparation more difficult: “This is why we focus mainly on our own qualities”, specifies the coach.

In the midfield, the team will have to do without Olivier Thill and Christopher Martins. Leandro Barreiro and Aldin Skenderovic will therefore have their work cut out for them. Ralph Schon, who has already scored against Liechtenstein, could be placed in defense. Marvin Martins is an option for the right-back. Dirk Carlson is currently lacking in practice, which is why Luc Holtz would like to take the opportunity to send him left defense on the pitch from the start. “Some of them will play maybe 20 to 30 minutes, others a half-time or 60 minutes”, nevertheless specifies the coach of the FLF.

If Luc Holtz hopes to emerge victorious from the field, “it is not always about the result,” he says. “If that was the case, I would have sent another team into the field against Liechtenstein.” Even the coach wants to be more strategic and intends to keep other assets for the future: “we have two other important games to play,” said Mr. Holtz.

The selection of the FLF has not won a friendly match for more than two years. The team’s last victory dates back to June 5, 2018 (1-0 against Georgia). Luc Holtz and his team hope to put an end to this black series this Wednesday evening.
