(Jmh with Joe Turmes) – Almost 18 months after their last visit to Luxembourg, the Portuguese team will play again against Roude Léiwen at the Josy-Barthel stadium and not in the brand new stadium of the Stade de Luxembourg. Due to a lack of validation from UEFA, the match, organized as part of the qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, will not serve as the inaugural match of the new sports venue, the Mental.lu site indicated on Monday.

In mid-February, UEFA representatives are expected at the Luxembourg stadium. Their opinion will depend on the date of the first official meeting on the new lawn. For a match against Portugal?

This is for the simple reason that the new stadium, dedicated to football and rugby, is not yet complete. The match remains scheduled for March 30. Contacted shortly after noon, the Luxembourg football federation indicates that it has not yet been informed of this decision. For now, the date of the official inauguration of the new stadium is still not known.

Started in 2017, the work on the new sports arena in the capital will have to last a little longer. Even if the final bill should remain stuck at 77 million euros. As a reminder, the last meeting between the Seleção das Quinas and the Roude Léiwen ended with the Portuguese 0-2 victory in the qualifiers for Euro-2020. The match was notably marked by the incidents noticed around the state of the lawn of the old stadium of the capital.
