The Witcher 4 announced: First information surprises

CD Projekt developers have officially announced a new open-world role-playing game in the Witcher saga. This is known so far.

RPG fans may have been waiting for the news for a long time: the Polish development studio CD Projekt RED has officially announced a new The Witcher game, which will be an open-world RPG. This means that “The Witcher 3 – Wild Hunt”, which was released in May 2015, receives its deserved successor.

There is also a small surprise in the developer announcement. Accordingly, the in-house REDengine, which was used in all previous Witcher parts and most recently Cyberpoint 2077, is not used in the development of the new Witcher game. Instead, CD Projekt RED relies on the new version 5 of the Unreal Engine developed by Epic Games. For this purpose, a multi-year strategic partnership for Unreal Engine 5 will be entered into with Epic Games.

“It includes not only licensing, but also the technical development of Unreal Engine 5 and potential future versions of Unreal Engine where relevant,” the developers explain, adding that the main goal is to develop Unreal Engine 5 together with Epic Games to customize for open-world experiences.

The REDengine should continue to be used for other projects. Including for the further development of the sci-fi role-playing game Cyberpunk 2077 and for its extensions.

Has The Witcher 4 really been announced?

Incidentally, CD Projekt RED has not officially announced “The Witcher 4”, but “only” a new open-world role-playing game from the “The Witcher” series. The announcement mentions “A New Saga Begins”.

It remains to be seen whether the new Witcher game will actually be called “The Witcher 4”. Actually, the first three “The Witcher” games about the witcher Geralt von Riva were created as a self-contained trilogy. That would speak against the title “The Witcher 4”.

In any case, CD Projekt RED has not yet denied the name “The Witcher 4”. In
