It’s very similar in the car. Here, too, assistants with important functions support the driver. Like this Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP), which have been mandatory in all cars for years. Four important questions illuminate the introduction of new systems from the middle of the year. (Assistance systems in the ADAC test)

How important are assistance systems for traffic safety?

If you look at the annual accident statistics, the effectiveness of the assistants becomes clear. The number of accidents and thus the number of people injured and killed has been falling for years. To ensure that this trend continues, EU Regulation 2019/2144 will come into force on July 6, 2022.
What’s in there?

The technology keeps an eye on everything and supports the driver on the road.

The regulation regulates the mandatory installation of assistance systems for manufacturers. A total of eight additional devices must be on board from this point in time in all newly developed cars. From July 2024, no new cars may be registered without the additional systems. This also applies to cars as well truck and buses.

Which assistants are then mandatory?

A total of eight other systems – from the cruise control system to the drowsiness warning system. Most of these features are already standard in the higher vehicle classes. The thrust of the EU regulation is clear: more security for everyone. Because the smart helpers must be planned for all new developments, regardless of whether they are small cars or luxury class.

What should be considered when dealing with the new technologies?

Work in winter and on dirty roads assistance systems not always error-free because sensors and cameras are blinded by dirt, moisture and salt residue. In order for the technology to run properly again, the components must be cleaned regularly. A clean cloth and water quickly ensure perfect operating condition.

fatigue warning

The built-in alarm clock: By recording eye and lid movements and/or steering behavior, the system analyzes whether the driver is getting tired. If this is the case, acoustic and optical signals remind you to take necessary breaks.

assistance systems

Passenger cars and light commercial vehicles must have an accident data recorder on board from July.

Result-related data storage

The BlackBox will soon be on board: cars and light-duty vehicles commercial vehicles must have an accident data recorder on board from July. This black box collects anonymous driving data such as speed, deceleration values, position, incline and e-call data at a accident.

The emergency brake light also switches on as soon as the ABS system regulates itself.

emergency brake light

Attention, strong delay! If a vehicle in front slows down significantly (more than 6 meters/second), the emergency brake light warns you by flashing the brake lights several times a second. It also switches on as soon as the ABS system regulates itself.

Intelligent speed assistant

Always the permitted speed in the field of vision: The assistant shows the current speed. If it is exceeded, it warns with visual and acoustic signals. The valid limits come from the traffic sign recognition and the navigation system.

Emergency Lane Departure Warning

The straight-ahead assistant keeps the lane: If the assistant recognizes an emergency situation, for example if the vehicle runs into oncoming traffic or if it threatens to veer off the road, the emergency lane keeper warns and, if necessary, even steers in the opposite direction.

assistance systems

The assistant uses cameras and sensors to recognize pedestrians and obstacles behind the vehicle.

reversing assistant

Everything behind the car in view: Many accidents happen when parking and reversing. With cameras and sensors, the assistant recognizes pedestrians and obstacles behind the vehicle and warns the driver via the display or an acoustic signal.

Emergency Brake Assist

Automatic braking in the event of danger: Impending collisions with vehicles and other obstacles on the road should be automatically detected via lidar, radar and camera and, in an emergency, prevented by independent braking.

Alcohol immobilizer

If you drink, you stop: from July, all new cars must have a standardized interface for retrofitting an alcohol-sensitive immobilizer. A control device is not yet part of the EU regulation.
