This is the most popular emoji in the world

The popularity of emoji varies by country, but one emoji is the most popular in the world. You probably know it and have probably used it many times.

Crossword Solver, a website specializing in crossword puzzles, has determined which are the most popular emojis and which emoji is the most popular across all continents. The Winner is…

The tears of laughter emoji is the most used emoji in 75 countries. In 2021, it accounted for over 5 percent of all emoji sent. This emoji is also number 1 in Germany, as well as in the USA, Canada, France, Great Britain and Australia.

In Russia, on the other hand, the heart is number 1. The heart is the second most used emoji globally. It is very popular in South America in particular, but the heart is also very popular in Belarus, Serbia and Hungary.

In Ukraine and Poland, on the other hand, the emoji showing the flag of Ukraine dominates – apparently a direct result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Poland is currently – precisely because of the Ukraine war – the only country that uses a foreign flag as the most common emoji. The Poles are thus demonstrating their solidarity with the attacked Ukraine.

The Swiss are just as proud of their country as the Liechtensteiners or Austrians and many Scandinavians and prefer to send their national flag as an emoji.

Saudi Arabia is a special case: a white heart is the most popular there. The reason for this is very specific, and fitting in a country where women have long been banned from driving: sending a red heart can be considered harassment and can result in hefty fines or even up to two years in prison. In China, on the other hand, the laugh-tear emoji reacts again. The Japanese, on the other hand, prefer the glitter emoji.

And what about Africa? There are also mainly tears laughed!

For its investigation, Crossword Solver analyzed tweets from all states that could definitely be assigned to a country. Crossword Solver then transferred the determined data to maps of the individual continents. Strictly speaking, the tears of laughter emoji is only the most popular emoji on Twitter, but this result should be transferrable to other platforms.
