Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 & 4: Why Activision canceled the remake

Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk has confirmed that there will be no remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 & 4. Blame it on Activision Blizzard.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is one of the most successful game series of the Playstation 2 era and has already achieved cult status. The remake of the first two parts of the series was also well received by critics and fans. But there will be no remake of the third and fourth part. Tony Hawk explained this personally in a Twitch stream.

The background is the merger of the remake development studio Vicarious Visions with Activision Blizzard, which was already fixed in 2021 and was finalized in April 2022. As a result, the 200-strong Albany-based studio also changed its name to

Blizzard Albany

.

After the merger, it was already assumed that the studio would no longer work on the pro skater series. Hawk has now provided final confirmation of this in a twich stream in conversation with game developer Andy Gentile, who was already involved in the development of the first pro skater parts. According to Hawk, Activision Blizzard tried to find a new development team for the series, but the pitches from different studios could not convince those responsible. And so the plans were shelved until further notice. However, this decision does not have to be final:

I mean who knows? Maybe we’ll find out when all the dust settles. You never know. I never thought that 20 years later we would do 1+2.

” said Hawk.

The remake of the first two parts of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater achieved an 89 rating on Metacritic and also enjoyed commercial success. It reached a million sales faster than any other game in the series.
