Trainer Advocaat wants to see a proud Feyenoord in the ArenA

At the age of 73 Dick Advocaat can prepare for his first Classic. “But that doesn’t really bother me that much”, he looked ahead to Feyenoord’s away match against Ajax next Sunday. “As a trainer of PSV, I think I showed you how to beat Ajax, right? That’s what I mean.”

Whatever the position in the rankings may be, for the supporters of Ajax and Feyenoord, a duel with PSV will not make it to the Classic. “It used to be the case,” said Lawyer. “As a little boy you stopped playing football and ran to a radio when that match started. Feyenoord – Ajax and Ajax – Feyenoord are the matches of the year.”

Without the injured David Neres, Lassina Traoré and Brian Brobbey, Ajax kicks off with a 3-point lead in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. The team of trainer Erik ten Hag is also a favorite again, Lawyer also realizes. “But we want to make it a match. Ajax is a good club. But as a team and player you still want to show yourself there. We shouldn’t just go back there, because then it will be 4-0 again.”

Feyenoord has become a team under Lawyer that does not always play well but is difficult to beat. De Hagenaar has been at the helm of the Rotterdam flagship since the end of October 2019. He saw his team in the Eredivisie only lose to Vitesse once. “I sometimes emphasize to my players that this is also a quality. We just have 35 points. We really did not receive them as a gift. We fought for that.”

Feyenoord is not looking for the first win in more than fifteen years at Ajax with five defenders. “But we will play in groups, from a good organization,” said Advocaat, who did not want to say whether he will start with Lucas Pratto, Nicolai Jørgensen or the fast Sinisterra as a striker. “It is a small advantage for us that there is no audience present. But they have that advantage when they come to us later.”

The Eredivisie is only halfway on Sunday. But it would be something, Lawyer who leaves Feyenoord at the end of the season with a national title. De Hagenaar himself does not even dare to think about it. “When we lost to Vitesse we were already written off”, he said. “Will we become champions again now? We want to finish in the top four, but continue to compete for as long as possible. And if there is more in it later, we want to strike. But we’ll see later.”
