Football: Transfers to England much more difficult after Brexit
1.14 pm: Now that Brexit is a fact, the English clubs can no longer freely contract players from the European Union. Football players from the EU will first have to get a work permit. Obtaining that license is linked to a points system. The FA has drawn up the new rules.
The work permit is only guaranteed and a transfer can be completed when the minimum number of points required has been achieved. Factors determining the points include the number of caps played by a player, the level of the player’s previous club, the success of that club in the competitions and the number of games played by a player.
Nothing will change for players from an EU country who are already under contract with an English club. They only have to apply to be allowed to stay longer.
According to the FA, the new transfer rules mean that English talent will have a better chance to develop in the Premier League, as it will become significantly more difficult for “mediocre” foreign players to obtain a work permit.
Chelsea makes millions in profit despite corona
11.31 amDespite the corona crisis, Chelsea has done well last season. The London club from the Premier League recorded a profit of 32.5 million pounds (converted more than 36 million euros).
The club reported a lower turnover (454 million euros compared to 498 million euros in the previous financial year), but was nevertheless able to make a profit thanks to extra income through qualification for the Champions League and from the sale of players. Eden Hazard’s transfer to Real Madrid last summer reportedly earned Chelsea 100 million euros.
“As with many companies, the pandemic has had a significant impact on Chelsea’s income, but it is a sign of strength and stability that our club was still able to make a profit,” said Bruce Buck. Had the pandemic not broken out, the club would have made record sales and record profits last season, Buck added at the time.
Chelsea is the current number 6 with 26 points from 16 games. The club will play against Manchester City on Sunday.
