Travelers arriving in the UK quarantined

The 14-day measure is aimed at limiting the spread of the coronavirus, Minister of Northern Ireland Brandon Lewis said on Friday.

(AFP) – “People arriving in the UK will have to quarantine themselves” in order to “contain” the rate of transmission of the disease, Lewis said on television Sky News. “Obviously, returning British citizens will be able to quarantine themselves at home. Visitors will have to make arrangements to carry out this quarantine for 14 days, ”he added. This measure, which he said will be reviewed “every three weeks”, must accompany the progressive deconfinement of the country that has to start from June 1 in the event of progress in the fight against the pandemic.

Brandon Lewis clarified that there is no exemption “for the time being” for travelers arriving from countries with low transmission rates. According to the British press, travelers will be subject to random checks and offenders will be exposed to a fine of 1,000 pounds (around 1,117 euros).

Exceptions are, however, made for road transporters and medical personnel, as well as for the Irish, but not for travelers arriving from France, as London and Paris had recently suggested. Details of the measure are to be released by Interior Minister Priti Patel at the government’s daily press conference scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday.
