Two hits from Wout Weghorst helped VfL Wolfsburg to the victory over Werder Bremen. The former AZ striker thus played the leading role in a true goal frenzy, 5-3. Wolfsburg climbed to fifth in the Bundesliga.
In the 37th minute, Weghorst put Wolfsburg in the lead. Remarkably, that was already the fifth goal of the game, 3-2. Leonardo Bittencourt had taken care of the opening goal for Werder. Then Ridle Baku and John Brooks scored for the home team, before Kevin Möhwald made it 2-2.
Werder returned immediately after the resumption. Brooks scored again, but this time the American worked the ball behind his own goalkeeper. The answer then came again from Weghorst, who took 4-3 fifteen minutes before the end. Far in extra time, the Pole Bartosz Bialek made the final decision.
Tahith Chong came in at Werder Bremen about 20 minutes before the end. The club played the last 10 minutes with one man less after the red card for Kevin Möhwald.
