Trump pardons Steve Bannon in his final hours as president

In his last hours as US president, Donald Trump has pardoned his former adviser Steve Bannon. He was prosecuted for financial fraud related to the construction of the wall on the United States-Mexico border.

Today Democrat Joe Biden will be inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States. That means that Republican Donald Trump’s final hours as president have arrived. In those last hours, Trump has granted “presidential pardon” to a total of 73 people, including Steve Bannon.

Financial fraud

Steve Bannon, along with three others, was officially charged with financial fraud in August. Trump’s advisor during his 2016 election campaign set up a crowdfunding campaign that raised more than $ 25 million. That money would be used to build the wall between the United States and Mexico. But the money eventually all disappeared into the pockets of Bannon and his three accomplices. The case was supposed to be in May 2021, but at the last minute Donald Trump used his presidential pardon to acquit Bannon.

The White House official statement reads: “President Trump has pardoned Stephen Bannon in full. Prosecutors have told Mr. Bannon has been prosecuted with allegations of fraud resulting from his involvement in a political project. Mr. Bannon is an important leader in the conservative movement and is known for his political acumen. ”

Children offended

There was at first uncertainty whether Trump would pardon Bannon as the two grew apart in recent years. In addition, Bannon has spoken out in a book about the children of Donald Trump. For example, he referred to Ivanka Trump as “dumb as a brick”. Trump responded that Bannon had “lost his mind”.

But in recent days, Trump and Bannon are said to have been in touch again, so the president decided to pardon his former adviser.

It was first thought that Trump might try to pardon himself, but he doesn’t.
