Supporters of ex-US President Donald Trump are openly toying with the idea of carrying out a serious attack on the Capitol in Washington with numerous dead, according to police reports. Members of the militia “have expressed their wish that they want to blow up the Capitol and kill as many members of Congress as possible,” said the acting chief of the police in charge of parliament, Yogananda Pittman, on Thursday.
The upcoming speech by Trump’s successor Joe Biden in front of both chambers of congress has been named as the point in time for the project. A specific date has not yet been set for this annual address, in which the President traditionally expresses himself on the state of the nation. It usually takes place in the first few months of the year.
Call for more security
In light of the findings, it is advisable to maintain the increased security measures, said Pittman. The people who had expressed themselves accordingly were members of the militia who were already there when the Capitol was attacked on January 6th. At the time, around 800 Trump supporters had swarmed into the Capitol with the intention of preventing Senators and MPs from officially confirming Biden’s victory in the presidential election.
Some targeted Vice President Mike Pence, whom they tried to kill for, they said, betrayed “their President” by performing his constitutional duties.
Several people died in the unprecedented attack that caused horror around the world. More than 200 people have been charged so far for their roles in the riot, including some with links to far-right groups.
