Normally, the prize for best film is awarded last. But this year the order was reversed. Critics suspected that the organization wanted to end with an emotional final chord. Beloved actor Chadwick Boseman, who died in August, was by far a favorite for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. His widow sat in the hall to receive the prize.
However, it was actor Anthony Hopkins who, contrary to expectations, won the coveted prize for his role in The Father. The actor was not even there to receive the prize and only heard the next morning that he had won. In a word of thanks, he praised Boseman’s work and thanked the Academy for the second statue in his career.
“We were not supposed to end up with a prize for someone who was not there,” admits Mills. “It was a risk that we took consciously. At the same time it was a final that everyone is talking about. ”
Mills compares it to the mistake three years ago. In the announcement of the winner for best picture, actors Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were given the wrong envelope. They reported that La La Land received the award; this turned out to be Moonlight. This mistake led to chaos on the stage. “Some people were angry, some people enjoyed it. I think both options are better than a presentation that leaves people indifferent. ”
