Apple has released the tvOS 14.5 update for the Apple TV 4K. The new version of the operating system brings new features such as color balance calibration or support for the PS5 and Xbox Series X | S controllers.

Just a few days ago, the 2nd generation Apple TV 4K (with A12 Bionic & HDMI 2.1) was presented. There are already some new features from which the current version of the Apple TV 4K from 2017 (as well as the Apple TV HD) benefits. The latest version of the operating system is installed automatically or manually, depending on the settings on the Apple TV. In the settings under System> Software updates> Update software you can manually initiate the installation of tvOS 14.5. After a short download followed by a restart you will find yourself on the new platform.

Calibrate the color balance on the Apple TV 4K

One of the most interesting new features is certainly the color balance correction process. Using the camera of an iPhone (with FaceID and iOS 14.5) the displayed image quality can be improved. It should be noted that the calibration only corrects the “incorrect picture settings” of the television locally on the Apple TV 4K. If you then change the picture mode on the TV, for example, the color balance may no longer be correct. The “Color Balance” calibration works for SDR and HDR (HDR10) content, but not for Dolby Vision, as the format takes a dynamic approach.

Adapted frame rates and “outsourced” apps

Tied to the topic of image quality, tvOS 14.5 provides the integration of further frame rate options of 29.97 Hz and 59.94 Hz and thus the correct output of certain films and series. In the past, the frame rate was “smoothed out” to 30 Hz and 60 Hz, which could lead to stuttering. With the voice input function “Type to Siri” texts can be spoken and thus offers a good alternative to the onscreen keyboard. Installed apps that have not been used for a long time can be automatically removed to save space. The app remains visible in the menu and is downloaded again as soon as it is selected. However, data and saved progress (e.g. when playing games) are retained. This function can be activated under Settings> Apps> Store apps.

Support for PS5 & Xbox Series X | S controllers

Anyone who also uses the Apple TV 4K for gaming (e.g. via Apple Arcade) will be happy about the support of the Xbox Series X | S and PlayStation 5 controllers! Because games can certainly not be controlled better than with the current controller reference.
