UEFA confirms stoppage of championship in BGL Ligue

The umbrella body of European football accepted Monday the request of the Luxembourg Football Federation which wished to put an end to the competition.

The Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF) said on Monday that UEFA had agreed to the premature end of the national competitions it had asked for early last week. The BGL Ligue 2019-2020 season is therefore officially closed.

The terms of the elite championship are as follows. The competition is closed on March 12, the date of suspension of national competitions. If the title of champion is not awarded, no relegation will be pronounced “in order to be able to return to a normal situation” during the 2021-2022 season and the next season will be considered as “a transitional season”.

With regard to the clubs to be entered in the European cups, the FLF board of directors based – as requested by UEFA – “on sporting criteria obtained in national competitions”, in occurrence the classification of the BGL League of March 12. This is how Fola Esch will represent Luxembourg in the Champions League while Progrès Niederkorn, FC Differdange 03 and Union Titus Pétange will be entered in the Europa League.
