The space division of the United States Armed Forces, called the Space Force, now has its own anthem. It’s not as abstruse as the one from the Steve Carell series of the same name, but it still takes some getting used to.
Semper Supra
named for the agency’s eponymous moth, was composed and written by serving and former members of the military, who were also active in various military music groups.
“And so it was quite a long time of work because I wanted to make sure that everything that’s going on in the song adequately represents all the abilities that our Space Force is dealing with and that I was conveying the mission or vision of what don’t mess up what the Space Force is doing”
said Space Force General John Raymond in the announcement video.
The suitability for everyday use of the piece of music can certainly be discussed, as the comments on YouTube show (translated):
– This sounds like a song played on the shelter radio when waking up at the beginning of a Fallout game. (Carl Tanner)
– I love that this space age song for the space forces sounds like it was written in 1883. (Binnska Wibble)
The lyrics of the anthem are:
“We’re the mighty watchful eye, Guardians beyond the blue, The invisible front line, Warfighters brave and true. Boldly reaching into space, there’s no limit to our sky. Standing guard both night and day, We’re the Space Force from on high.”
At the end of 2019, under the then US President Donald Trump, the US Space Force was elevated from a sub-department of the Air Force to a separate service. She works with private space organizations such as Space X (Elon Musk) and Blue Origin (Jeff Bezos), among others.
