Austria survived the third wave better than most other countries, says Kurz. Much of Germany has been in lockdown since January. There, 71 per 100,000 inhabitants died of Corona this year, in Austria it was 46.
Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) is much more cautious in his announcements – the pandemic is not over yet, he warns. The vaccination rate also makes him confident: On Friday there was a daily record with almost 100,000 vaccinations. A total of 2.6 million people in Austria received a first stitch, and just under a million received the second. This means that 10.6 percent of the population is fully immunized. Most of the fully immunized live in Tyrol (15.3 percent) and in Lower Austria (13.2).
Vaccination appointments in Vorarlberg
In Vorarlberg, only 9 percent of the population are fully immunized, in the state there is currently the highest seven-day incidence in Austria at over 170. There you open the vaccination appointments – regardless of age or previous illnesses. By mid-June, all people who registered by the beginning of May should be vaccinated against the coronavirus.
40,000 appointments were sent on Saturday. “For me this is one of the most important moments in the vaccination campaign,” says Governor Markus Wallner (ÖVP). Lower Austria was previously the first federal state to unlock vaccinations for all age groups.
