Virgil van Dijk is back on the field. The 29-year-old Liverpool defender posted a video on Instagram showing him holding up a ball at the sports complex in Dubai, where he is working on his recovery from a serious injury. Van Dijk injured his right knee in October during the Merseyside derby against fellow townsman Everton (2-2) and had to undergo an operation.
“I will do everything I can to return as soon as possible”, the captain of the Dutch national team said at the time. “I review my rehabilitation process from day to day. My focus is entirely on that.” National coach Frank de Boer hopes that Van Dijk will recover in time for the European Championship next summer.
Van Dijk initially worked on his recovery at the Liverpool training complex. A few weeks ago he went to Dubai to continue his rehabilitation. This weekend he met his former teammate Dejan Lovren, who is at training camp with FC Zenit in Dubai. “Virgil was seriously injured, but he looks stronger than ever,” the Croat wrote on Twitter. “You will soon be back on top level, brother.”
