Video app Plex starts subscription service for old games

The new game service Plex Arcade was announced on the app developer’s blog. A subscription costs $ 5 per month, or $ 3 if you have a Plex Pass subscription.

For that amount, subscribers get access to 27 games for the old Atari 2600 and Atari 7800. Subscribers can also add their own games and emulators to the library.

Not everyone can take out a Plex Arcade subscription just like that. Users need their own media server with Windows or macOS to install the company’s software. This plays the games and streams the image to a media player such as a smartphone, Apple TV or Nvidia Shield.

Plex is going legal

It is Plex’s umpteenth attempt to become a platform for legal media. The software has been a popular option to sort and play illegally downloaded movies and series on devices for many years.

In recent years, Plex has included legal free movies that can be played supported by advertising. By offering the Atari games for a subscription price, the company can pay license fees for the old titles.
