Herbert Diess said this in an interview with the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
According to Diess, it would be a “very logical step” for Apple to enter the car market. The maker of iPhones can then combine his expertise in batteries, software and design with enormous financial resources.
Diess doesn’t think an electric and self-driving car from Apple will be there very soon, because the auto industry is very different from the tech sector. According to analysts, it may take until 2025 before the ‘Apple Car’ would be ready for the market.
The Volkswagen CEO also says he is not concerned that car groups will in the long term become contract manufacturers who make cars for large tech companies. Several tech giants, including Amazon and Google mother Alphabet, are working on self-driving vehicles.
Hyundai and Kia spoke with Apple
Recently, there were reports that talks between Apple and South Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia about the development of self-driving cars have been suspended. Various media have reported in recent months that Apple and Hyundai were working on a deal to create self-driving cars together.
