VW ID.X: test, prototype, battery

The dull beast from Wolfsburg: This is how the VW ID.X drives with 340 hp

The ID.3 comes as an X with 340 hp. Does it have to be that way? Yes! AUTO BILD is doing a round with the boss in the “dull beast”, as he is called in Wolfsburg.

M.it “Just do it!” you have had good experiences at VW. So in 2015 in Wolfsburg came out of nowhere MEB platform, on which all today’s electric cars of the group are based. Development engineer Andreas Reckewerth is one of those who “do it”. He accompanies the ID.3 from day one. Now he has locked himself away with his team, tinkering, testing, screwing. The goal: Can there be more? It goes: Here you can see it ID.X, the electric Volkswagen ID.3 as a 340 hp version! (Important tips for buying a new car on the Internet)

The ID.X doesn’t give a GTI club sport a chance

It has a lot of steam: The ID.X goes from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.3 seconds – at 160 km / h it is over.

AUTO BILD was allowed to prototype as the first medium ever to drive. Instructor: Brand CEO Ralf Brandstätter himself. “Many already know that you can win every traffic light spurt with e-cars, if you want,” says the VW boss, “with the ID.X we beat from 0 to 100 km / h also the GTI Clubsport. Driving an electric car is not a sacrifice or a farewell to driving fun, it is exactly the opposite. “The brute ID.3 in manganese gray and with neon yellow decorative stripes, called” the matt beast “in Wolfsburg, manages the spurt of 0 to 100 in 5.3 seconds. The Golf GTI Clubsport is 5.7 seconds. In the intermediate sprint from 80 to 120 km / h the ID.X takes a whole second from the GTI: 3.5 to 4.5 seconds. By the way: without all-wheel drive, that was technically too complicated, with real rear-wheel drive.

The power is good for the electric speedster, even drifts are possible

It can also work sideways: The full 340 hp and 460 Nm of the ID.X go exclusively to the rear.

You notice that when driving on the test oval and handling route, where Brandstätter and How To Cars boss Tom Drechsler take turns at the wheel ESC Sport and ESC Off (Then the electronics regulate at the very last second, I’ve tried it, it’s a shame about the tires). Around 146 to 204 hp the ID.3 series version if you don’t think about it, rather about him Fun of drifting, because he can. Of course, this rarely or never works in everyday life, but the power suits the electric speedster well. And Herbert Diess, the company boss, didn’t even say about that Tesla Model 3 Performance: “He walks like a pig”? Here is the counterpart to it. Not as hard as expected, despite the 21 incher 245 tires. But driving fun as long as that battery pack holds. And VW, please, keep the sound like that. It’s not mixed in, it actually is that turbine-like humming revving of the electric motor.

What did the Reckewerth team do? The ID.X is really sustainable! It was created from an ID.3 of the First Edition that was actually intended for scrapping, one that was removed from a car that had been involved in an accident 62 kWh battery and from one ID.4 GTX after a crash test. Front wheel carrier, brakes, strut, springs come from the ID.4, as well as the Performance engine plus axis. The software has been changed, as has the powertrain. The ID.X weighs 1933 kilograms, a powerful 460 Nm.

In the interior, the ID.X already shows the ID.3 improvements

Listen to the criticism: In the future there will be a larger monitor and improved sliders in the ID.3.

In the interior, some things are already being changed here that bothers customers the most – and what VW will have in new equipment lines from the end of November 2021 ID.3 will bring. 12-inch instead of 10-inch screen, the unloved slider finally illuminated, better fabrics, interior door surfaces covered with Alcantara. “The buyers’ criticism has been received,” says Brandstätter, that they will Facelift move forward to early 2023, where there will be completely new interior door panels, decorative stitching instead of plastic in garbage can gray, one new front apron and front hood, the blind split rear lights will really shine in the future. Jozef Kaban, the new chief designer, is responsible for the changes that are intended to enhance the ID.3.

In the spirit of CEO Brandstätter, it also brings more sustainability into the electric speedster: with fabrics that were woven from plastic waste fished from the world’s oceans – for example in the headliner. “The best way to save resources is to reuse what has already been produced,” says the boss. As with the ID.X … (Calculate maintenance costs? To the car insurance comparison)
