VW Passat as a used car: prices, information, strengths, weaknesses

Most Passat start their careers as a base for sales representatives. This eventful life is not without consequences. The brake discs in particular suffer due to the high annual mileage and wear out faster than average. There are already problems here during the first main inspection. The most important information for used car buyers from the AUTO BILD TÜV report!

VW Passat (Type 3G)

Construction time: 2014 to present
Engines: 120 hp (1.6 TDI) to 280 hp (2.0 TSI)
Price: from 12,000 euros
Occupant safety (Euro NCAP crash test 2014): 5 Stars

VW Passat Variant 2.0 TDI

The station wagon share among the Passat models is around 95 percent.

That’s him: Larger than a Golf VII, which is based on the same modular transverse matrix and therefore has the same technical basis. Eight centimeters more wheelbase than the predecessor, so there is significantly more space inside, the proportions are more harmonious due to the shorter overhangs. The 3.6-liter VR6 flies out of the program, the 2.0 TSI with 280 hp delivers comparable driving performance with significantly less thirst. The diesels all meet the Euro 6 standard and have up to 240 hp real steam. Since the end of 2015, the GTE (sedan and estate) has been a 218 hp stronger Plug-in hybrid drive available.

* Further information on the official fuel consumption and the official specific CO2 emissions and, if applicable, the electricity consumption of new cars can be found in the “Guideline on Official Fuel Consumption”, which is available free of charge at all sales outlets and from “Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH” (www .dat.de).

He can: The EA288 engines run powerfully, quietly and economically. Timing chain problems are finally a thing of the past, the aggregates have a toothed belt. Of the all wheel drive 4Motion is only standard in the most powerful diesel and petrol engines. Anyone driving in more demanding terrain relies on the Alltrack off-road version with hill start and descent assistance – very popular in the Alps.

This is annoying: As with many other makes and models, electronic problems such as failing accumulate Navis, cameras or assistance systems. Most diesels were company cars in their first life, which were put through their paces correspondingly hard at up to 100,000 km a year.

VW Passat (Type 3C)

Construction time: 20O5 to 2014
Engines: 102 hp (1.6) to 300 hp (R36/3.6 FSI)
Price: from 2000 euros
Occupant safety (Euro NCAP crash test 2005): 5 Stars

VW Passat Variant 1.8 TSI

From 2000 euros there are already used copies of the VW Passat built until 2014.

That’s him: Thanks transversely built Engines much more spacious than its predecessor. A major facelift followed in 2010, declared by VW to be a new development, but technology and Engines are largely identical. The Variant 2.0 TDI with 140 hp is the bestseller, plugs in over 1700 liters. Side airbags in the back cost extra until recently.

He can: Offer comfortable space and well-tuned comfortable springs. It is the price-performance winner when it comes to comfort. With the exception of the VR6, all engines have been supercharged since 2010. In 2011 came the Alltrack that comes with four wheel drive and terrain program is more useful than some SUV. The younger cheat diesels of the EA189 series can be problematic.

This is annoying: The DSG gearbox often jerks, and some suffer from it diesel loss of coolant, which is usually caused by the coolant booster pump or leaking exhaust gas recirculation coolers. They often coke up with too many short trips; the exchange costs about 400 euros. Especially the Variant is plagued by edge rust on the tailgate. Also known: stuck electric parking brakes, worn seat covers and defective trunk and ignition locks.

TÜV verdict

landing gear

Here the current Passat cuts a very good figure at the HU. At best, axle springs and dampers are noticed during the second examination. Reverse picture with the predecessor: defects in the also suspensions, dampers and springs occur much more often than on average. There is nothing to complain about when it comes to the steering.

light

While the Passat 3G consistently performs better than the average, the defect rates increase in the older 3C at the fifth HU. The front lighting and the turn signal system are particularly vulnerable.

brakes

Still packs a punch in old age: the foot and parking brakes are far behind the average defect rates. The brake hoses and lines are also solid and unobtrusive. The condition of the brake discs, on the other hand, is consistently worse than average and has suffered particularly from the sometimes immense annual mileage.

environment

Oil loss isn’t a particularly big issue, but emissions testing poses a problem for the 3C all too often. The TÜV inspectors also only know of corroding exhausts from older models.
