Wadden Islands not locked for tourists for the time being Inland

Until Tuesday morning there was no case of infection with the virus on the Wadden Islands. “Residents say: we are still clean and please let it stay that way. But of course it is not at all sure that there is no contamination, it just has not been determined, “explains a spokesman for the municipality of Ameland.

Political party Samen Terschelling tried to implement a municipal ban on tourist trips to the island on Monday evening, but was quickly whistled back by the municipality and the other council parties on the island. “So we can all sit on the ferry to Terschelling for fun. Incomprehensible. It is quite easy to shift things to the safety region ”, the group believes.

The ferry services to the Wadden Islands have limited the number of passengers that can travel at a time since Tuesday. The shipping companies have the impression that it is less busy, because people are responding to the national call to stay at home as much as possible.

A number of bungalow parks on the islands have closed their doors for the time being, partly because catering and sports facilities had to be closed anyway. Attractions such as the daily Robbentocht on Ameland have also been canceled due to the risk of contamination. According to the Tourist Office on Schiermonnikoog, there is not much to do for tourists. Holidaymakers can still book an accommodation, but the island is concerned about the limited medical capacity on Schiermonnikoog.

The Fryslân Safety Region, which includes Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog, could not say on Tuesday whether tourism to the islands will be discussed in the short term.
